M E I N & M A S K; what is seen and unseen
A changeling's true face is something hidden from most of the mortal world. Although the changeling's physical body has been changed, ordinary humans and even most supernatural beings are unable to see the Lost for what they have become. They see instead the Mask, an illusion that hangs around each changeling and provides a human guise. Beneath the Mask is the mein, the true appearance of their altered selves. The Seeming is the manner in which a changeling's fae nature manifests itself. Jamie is one of the Fairest: the most beautiful of Arcadia, if not always the kindest; the elegant and adored, the graceful and manipulative. He is part of the Flowering Kith; flowers blossom on bare earth where he has stood (although they take more time to appear in the human world rather than seconds, as they did in Faerie). His skin is petal-soft and bright with a bloom of healthy. He always has a seductive fragrance: whatever might be most appealing to whoever is near him. Jamie favors an androgynous look, leaning femme though his wardrobe isn't limited by gender presentation or expectation. Whatever he's wearing, he always takes care to look put together. Jamie's gender is as fluid as the rest of him and what he has between his legs on any given day depends on his mood or partners' desires. He uses he/him pronouns for nostalgia: those are the ones he had first. Jamie is a member of the Spring Court; changelings in the Emerald Court reject the pain and sorrow of their time in Arcadia, drawing power from desire and joie de vivre. He's dedicated to chasing his own desires and fulfilling the desires of others. M A G I C; Spring Court & Fairest Contracts
The fae have always been known as great bargainers and deal-makers; contracts allow the Lost to call upon the bargains their erstwhile masters made with the world itself to achieve miraculous effects. Verdant Spring - Capricious and whimsical moods of Spring The Ineffable Gift: A changeling with this clause exudes an air of confidence that makes others take notice. Spur the Crowd: A changeling speaking in front of a crowd is able to push their emotions in the direction he desires. Fleeting Spring - Emerald Court's power over desire Cupid's Eye: This clause reveals what the subject's desires are. Growth if the Ivy: This contract allows the changeling to direct a subject's desires elsewhere. Wyrd-Faced Stranger: The changeling appears as whomever the subject most desires to see at that moment. Pandora's Gift: If a changeling is gifted by the target, the changeling may create an object the target deeply desires out of nothing. Waking the Inner Faerie: If a target freely tells the changeling their desires, the changeling can force them to pursue it with single-mindedness. Eternal Spring: Spring Court's contract of growth and rejuvenation Gift of Warm Breath: The changeling's power rejuvenates a single living target, filling them with renewed energy and vigorous life. New Lover's Kiss: This contract allows the changeling to call rain down from even a cloudless sky. Warmth of the Blood: The power of Spring is strong enough to heal injuries and soothe pain. This contract allows the changeling to channel the verdant might of Spring into a person's body, mending their wounds. Yesterday's Birth: After spilling two drops of blood on an object and gathering it in their hands, the changeling can accelerate its maturation. Mother of All Deaths: If a person has bled to death in an area, the changeling may call on and enhance the plants around them to fight on their behalf. Vainglory - the Fairest's mastery of supernatural beauty and splendor Songs of Distant Arcadia: If performing in front of a powerful audience, the changeling performs any chosen act flawlessly. Mantle of Terrible Beauty: After fighting a duel, a changeling may turn their beauty into something terrible. Splendor of the Envoy's Protection: The changeling temporarily abandons their Mask, revealing their fae mien to all mortals (and other beings) within sight. However, sing this clause doesn't harm the changeling, because their appearance dazzles mortals with amazing glory rather than confusing or frightening them. They are impressed to an extent that they are incapable of attacking except in self-defense. Separation - the power of those farthest removed from reality Tread Lightly The changeling can partially remove herself from gravity's influence. She cannot fly or even jump further than normal, but she takes only bashing damage from falling, regardless of the distance. In addition, she can walk or run over any solid surface even if it would not normally support her weight, such as tissue paper or thin panes of glass. She can also walk across mud, dry sand, or any other surface without getting her feet even damp. Evasion of Shackles: The character can automatically slip out of any handcuffs, straightjacket, or other restraints. Breaching Barriers: The changeling can walk through any closed or locked door or window that he could fit through if it were open. Reflections - vanity and mirrors Reflections of the Past: A changeling can use this clause to look into a reflective surface and see what has been reflected there sometime in the last week. Reflection's Grasp: A changeling can reach through a reflective surface and out another. Glimpse of a Distant Mirror: The changeling looks into one reflective surface and out of another. The outgoing surface must have reflected his face before. Stealing the Solid Reflection:Reaching into a reflective surface, a changeling can pull out a reflection as a solid object. M A G I C; Other Contracts
Dream - entering and shaping dreams of others Pathfinder: Breaking off a Thorn and bleeding allows the changeling to learn about the Hedge in their immediate area, including the trails, Hollows, and vegetation. Forging the Dream: The changeling invoking this clause becomes the director, cinematographer, and editor of a subject's dreams. The changeling may literally change the subject's dreams to depict whatever they wish. They must be sitting or standing next to their subject, touching them in some way, for this to work. Cobblethought: the changeling can reach into a subject's dreams and extract an item or image from them that exists or plays out in the real world. The subject need not be asleep for the changeling to attempt this, they must simply have had a dream at some point in recent events. Items pulled from dreams in this way have a hazy, imprecise sensory quality to them. The limitation is a single object or idea--the changeling could not withdraw a full castle (made up of walls, hallways, doors, stairs, towers) or a functional car (with its own distinct parts and pieces). The changeling must have a single fiber of their subject's bedclothes, whether a thread from a pillow case or a shirt they like to sleep in, etc.
Hearth - traditional fae blessings of fortune Fickle Fate: Sometimes fortune is just not in your favor. The subject affected by fickle fate seems to perform poorly in whatever task they set themselves to. Favored Fate: This clause alters the flow of fortune when a subject attempts an action and makes for favorable outcomes. Beneficent Fate: by altering the attentions of fortune, the changeling guarantees success on the subject's next endeavor. It's got one chance, though: if you're in a fight, you might land a knock out hit, but if you're opponent gets back up, your fate is in your own hands. Mirror - changing appearance Skinmask: The changeling alters their flesh to appear as another individual, but the change only affects a single part or aspect of their body. A changeling who holds an object from a target may alter their face or limbs to resemble the target's. Oddbody: The changeling re-aligns their body's makeup so that one particular feature becomes something other than human: bestial claws, glowing eyes, skin like bark, etc. The changeling must consume the threads of a caterpillar's cocoon. Walls Have Ears: The changeling speaks with an object to learn its secrets, prior owners, and weaknesses. Smoke - stealth, invisibility, and soundlessness Nevertread: When a changeling invokes this clause, all traces of their passing vanish. No footprints, no marks, no scent. Even grass trampled underfoot leaves no evidence of their movement. The changeling must have spent at least an hour barefoot in the past day for this contract to work. Shadowpatch: Light seems to avoid the changeling when they invoke this contract and darkness congeals around them. Phantom Glory: The changeling temporarily becomes completely intangible. In this state, she is immune to all physical attacks and can pass through all physical barriers. Light-shy: If the changeling has told a lie with significance, they can turn themselves completely invisible. Shield - contracts of protection and healing Shared Burden: The changeling inflicts injuries on themself to heal another. Hours - the flow of time Pathfinder: Breaking off a Thorn and bleeding allows the changeling to learn about the Hedge in their immediate area, including the trails, Hollows, and vegetation. Frozen Moment: At sunrise or sunset, the changeling can freeze time for a few minutes. Thief of Days: If the changeling knows the name of a dead man who once owned it, they can age an object to the point of destruction. Winter - contracts of sorrow and woe Slipknot Dreams: The target is hollowed out of regrets, being soothed. Ermine's Winter Coat: The changeling blends in with surroundings. A Mere Vessel for Loss: Letting the numbness of sorrow in, a changeling becomes hardened against physical pain as well. Fear is Nothing: Already resistant to fear by embracing loss, the changeling resist even supernatural terror. Grief is Stronger Than Death: Wrapped in his sorrow, a changeling ignores pain and injury, delaying wounds until after the battle. H I S T O R Y; times that made them, that broke them.
Jamie is a Changeling: he was once human and was captured by the fae, and kept in Arcadia for an unknown period of time as a servant. His time in Arcadia fundamentally changed him, and when he manages to get back to the human world, he is no longer human himself. Capable of performing magic and seeming otherworldly without his mein in place, Jamie is now and forever will be somewhere between human and fae. His real history is something like this: alone and unloved, he caught the eye of one of the True Fae, called Muirgheas, and was swept away one night while he slept. He woke in luxury, but the illusion quickly faded. Every human that enters Arcadia loses some of their humanity, one way or another. None of the changelings know why - they assume it's to avoid going mad, but none of them know if it actually works. Sometimes the process is agony; sometimes it's just forgetting. For Jamie, it became both. He was a favored companion, pretty enough to make the Old Man content and benign enough to be left untended when their Keeper's interest took him elsewhere. He struggled to remember himself, his name - anything. Sam helped; he reminded Jamie of his name, of his life, and made sure the master's flower didn't lose himself completely. After time untold, Jamie took part in a plot to escape at Sam's behest. Since he had their Keeper's favor, Jamie was the one that could get close enough to slit his throat. It might not kill the Old Man, but it gave them time to run. Along with several other changelings, he escaped in a mad, wild dash through the Hedge and back into the mortal world - the real world. Returning to the world years after he left it was a shock at first, his only chance at survival was to join a changeling freehold: a safe place for people like him to avoid the True Fae. Changelings have power, after all, especially in groups. Cadeus, Quick, and Sam - changelings that escaped with him - convince him to stay in the freehold for safety and for familiarity. Like so many others, Jamie started his time there in the Winter Court, afraid and hidden away. But, eventually, his desire to live again led him to the Spring Court. He has spent the last several years just trying to get by with all the drama of his new world while also avoiding the attention of the Fae. ** Preferences/Kinks ** OC Quick Reference ** |
